Current disease surveillance in the US : physicians and labs submit data to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “There’s typically a week-long delay between an outbreak and the release of an official report,” Adam Cole reports on NPR’s Shots.

So what’s a public health expert in search of more real-time information to do? Hit the Internet, of course.

Think about it, what do you do when you think you might have the flu? Call your doctor? No (unless you really think you might be dying). You Google it.
