Located in Ghana’s capital Accra and colloquially referred to as ‘Sodom and Gomorrah’, Old Fadama is Ghana’s largest slum. Home to some 80 000 people, it has no public sanitation services at all. What limited toilet facilities exist in the community are privately owned and operate on a pay-per-use basis. People who cannot pay - children, for example - defecate in the open or in plastic bags which are often dumped near toilets, such as this one.

Africa Fighting Malaria Director Richard Tren highlights the money spent (wasted?) on transporting African leaders in luxury. For example, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and John Kufuor, former president of Ghana, “have splashed out on new jets to the tune of around $30 million each.” Tren suggests money saved on elaborate private jets could be used to create a malaria control R&D trust fund.
“If African presidents have any difficulty with their travel schedules, they could surely be advised by David Cameron’s office,” Tren writes, noting that the British prime minister flies commercial and does not have a private jet.

My latest Kaiser Health News story examines several health care innovations that came to the U.S. from developing countries.
A shorter version of the piece appears on the Global Health magazine blog. It includes an exclusive interview with Vijay Govindarajan, General Electric’s chief innovation consultant. Though not yet a “best practice,” Govindarajan says innovation that originates in emerging markets is sure to be a “next practice.”
