I am proud to live in a world where a stranger’s suffering matters. Yet foreign aid, the best way to address that suffering, has a growing legion of critics. That is a contradiction we must remedy, and the best way to do it is to tell the truth about aid.

Earlier I blogged about Scientific Animations Without Borders (SAWB), an intiative to produce educational animated videos about health and agriculture issues for view on cell phones.
There’s something really fun and fascinating about the idea. So I decided to find out more from Julia Bello-Bravo, a field extension specialist for Hispanic programming at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Office of Extension and Outreach.
Responses to my questions follow. Answers have been edited slightly.

What does the love child of Xtranormal and mhealth look like?
Scientific Animations Without Borders, perhaps.
The initiative, which is being led by folks at the University of Illinois, creates educational animated videos for view on cell phones. The project hopes to take advantage of the widespread availability of cell phones in the developing world to spread information about agricultural and health issues.
“Animation reduces the costs associated with making a video on a particular topic, and allows the videos themselves to have near-universal appeal. The videos are narrated, and the narration can be recorded in any language with any dialect or accent,” according to a press release. The video above explains more.
